Coming Spring 2026:
New Community Basketball Court

Safe basketball courts are required to deliver basketball programming.  Based on the scarcity of basketball courts in town, Cape Hoops is currently advocating and leading an effort with the Town of Cape Elizabeth to create a new outdoor court within walking distance of all schools. This will provide a safe and convenient option for town youth to play ball and will replace the basketball court at Fort Williams that was repurposed for pickleball.

Timeline

  • June 10, 2024 - At Cape Elizabeth's Town Council meeting, Cape Hoops requested that the Council and Town Manager to work with us to move forward with a new outdoor basketball court at one of two sites that we identified (Lot next to the old Spurwink school or lot behind town hall). We explored various locations both on school grounds and on other town-owned land and these two sites were the most feasible. The hoops currently located at the parking lot behind IGA will be moved to the ultimate new location.

  • August 19, 2024 - The Town approved the site and plan for a new outdoor community basketball court at Town Center, near Thomas Memorial Library.

  • August, 20 2024 - Cape Hoops has agreed to the Town's request that we privately fundraise $16,500 to contribute to the court build. We are grateful to be a partner in the development of Cape Elizabeth's vibrant Town Center via the addition of a safe, public space for community children and teens to play basketball.

  • January 4, 2025 - Cape Hoops hosted the Slam Dunk Soiree at North43 Bistro to fundraise the $16,500 required contribution for a new outdoor community basketball court at Town Center. The Soiree helped Cape Hoops reach that fundraising goal and served as a community-building event for out Cape basketball audience.

  • February 2025 - December 2025 -

    • The Town of Cape Elizabeth engages Sebago Technics as lead enginner for the court design.

    • Cape Hoops attends the Febrary 2025 Town Planning Board workshop to assist coordination.

    • In June 2025, The Town of Cape Elizabeth releases a call for bids. An absense of first round bid responses highlighted the need for plan/bid revisions and a budget review.

    • Cape Hoops agrees to partner with the Town of Cape Elizabeth to review and update the bid, participate in budget value engineering, and oversee a second round call for bids.

    • Based on budget implications from the plan/bid update, Cape Hoops assisted with a request for additional funding. Cape Hoops memo to Town Council.

    • Cape Hoops attended the December 2025 Town Council Meeting to represent the budget updates. The Town Council approved the additional funding request! Our thank you to the Town Council.

    • The Portland Press Herald featured the court project

  • Spring 2026 - The Town of Cape Elizabeth begins construction on the new outdoor community basketball court near Thomas Memorial Library.

  • 2026 Date TBA - Cape Elizabeth Community Basketball Court Ribbon Cutting Ceremony
